Knowledge

The a-holes who live in the castle of OUR ancestors refused to recognize me and our American family as relatives. I want to understand why! Last time I tried contacting them, they blocked me on FB! We have the SAME ancestors! I don't want the stinking castle, I just wanted to have family connection and acknowledgement! I think it is important!

I just wonder if it has something to do with my great-grandfather leaving Austria to go to the USA (and later to Prague to Charles University) to become a doctor/surgeon. Maybe they thought of him as a conscientious objector....? Maybe it disgraced him? My grandmother's cousin said (in a letter I have of his) that he (himself) spent summers at his uncle's vacation home in Smecno in CZ,when he was a boy, his uncle being the Prime Minister of Austria.

They have been distorting family history. That does not make me happy that they left out an entire portion of the family name! Clam-von Martinitz (or Martinitc, etc) We DESERVE to know our full ancestors! They shorted the US relatives! Screw them!

The Counts of Clam

Epitaph of Christoph Perger
Epitaph of Christoph Perger

The family originates from west Austria and can be traced back to the 13th century. Before arriving at Clam Castle in 1454 the family was called Perger. This name was dropped when they became the Counts of Clam. Christoph Perger acquired Clam Castle and was therefore called Christoph of Clam.

In 1791 Carl Josef Count of Clam married Maria Anna Countess of Martinic. Since she was the last living Martinic, the two names as well as the estates and the coats of arms were united and so they became Count and Countess Clam-Martinic.

The Martinic family is one of the oldest and most important families of Bohemia. Over many centuries they held key positions in politics, army and administration.

The defenestration of Prague in 1618 was the trigger for the Thirty years’ war. Count Jaroslav Borzita of Martinic was one of the 3 defenestrated catholic noblemen.

This portrait shows him with a broken arm just after the Event.

The most well known member of the family was General-Major Count Heinrich Clam-Martinic who was appointed Prime Minister by Emperor Karl of Austria.

Heinrich was a close friend of the Habsburgs, especially to archduke Franz Ferdinand. They did a lot of shooting together and travelled around the world in 1892.

Today Count Carl Philip Clam Martinic runs the estate.

After he worked in Hong Kong for several years he took over the estate in the year 2003. He now lives with his wife Countess Stephanie and their three children throughout the year in a small wing of the castle.

It is now 550 years ago that the Clams first arrived here and Count Carl Philip Clam is the 16th generation living at Clam Castle.
